Iza Calzado reflects on life as she marks one year of surviving COVID-19

By Bong Godinez

It's been a year since Iza Calzado survived her battle against COVID-19, an experience that remains vivid until today to the former Kapuso actress.

In a lengthy Instagram post recently, Iza looked back and encouraged everyone to keep fighting despite the uncertainty as the pandemic continues to drag on.

“It was exactly a year ago when I was discharged from the hospital after 11 days of fighting this deadly virus we are now very much familiar with -- Covid 19,” wrote Iza.

“Now I am exactly where I wished I could be at that time and that is home. Perhaps it is why I can't even complain about being home. I do know that I am privileged to even have a home and food on the table and I acknowledge that it is something not everyone has, but should.”

She continued, “However, if you are reading this, that means you are alive and that in itself is a gift. I know that so many of us are struggling, it could be physically, mentally, spiritually, financially maybe even all at the same time but what I want to say is please fight to survive.

“You have been given an opportunity to live when so many have lost this chance. I hope you find something to be grateful for no matter how small it is.

“May you also find something to live for and fight for just like I did when I was in the hospital and now that I am home.”

She also thanked the doctors and nurses who took care of her while in confinement.

Iza expressed gratitude to God and everyone who prayed for her complete recovery from the illness.

“I don't know what lies ahead. Yes, there is so much uncertainty and anxiety, but I recognize that every breath is a blessing and for as long as I have this gift I will continue to fight to survive and, yes, thrive. I pray you do too. Love and Light, always!”

It was on March 25, 2020, when Iza revealed through Instagram that she was hospitalized for pneumonia and was waiting for her COVID-19 test result.

“Hello, everyone. It's been a while but I thought I'd update you all. I'm currently hospitalized for pneumonia and so, I was tested for Covid-19 and I've been waiting for the results for several days now,” Iza wrote.

“It's been a challenging time for me but it cannot compare to the frontliners who have cared for me and to whom I am so grateful.”

On March 28, 2020, Iza's manager Noel Ferrer announced that the actress tested positive for the coronavirus.

Iza eventually recovered from the disease enough for her to be discharged from the hospital.

The Philippines yesterday, April 5, recorded 8,355 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the country's total to 803,398.
